Prominent Scholars Jianqing FAN and Min CHEN Visited the International School of Economics and Management
On July 11th, prominent scholars Jianqing FAN and Min CHEN visited the International School of Economics and Management. The Secretary of the School Party Committee, Wenju WANG, the Deputy Secretary of the School Party Committee and the President, Weixing WU, met with the two experts and engaged in in-depth discussions on academic cooperation, the development of interdisciplinary fields, and the establishment of international exchange platforms. Party Committee member and Vice President Zhichao YIN also attended the meeting.
Later, Jianqing FAN and Min CHEN visited the International School of Economics and Management.
The college leadership team warmly welcomed the arrival of the two experts. Dean Kunpeng LI provided a detailed overview of the college's current situation, highlighting the challenges and opportunities it faces, such as improving the quantity and quality of academic achievements, fostering talent among faculty and students, and applying for research projects. Jianqing FAN pointed out that creating a favorable academic atmosphere and environment, strengthening international exchanges and cooperation, and building good relationships with universities and scholars worldwide are crucial for addressing these challenges. Min CHEN suggested that simultaneously enhancing both the quantity and quality of faculty and students would facilitate talent development to new heights.
Next, Jianqing FAN presented his latest research : the Factor Augmented Sparse Throughput (FAST) model and its estimates using deep neural networks. The presentation was hosted by Zhichao YIN. Combining factor models and sparse nonparametric models, the paper introduced the advantages of the FAST model, presented the FAST-NN estimates based on neural networks, and demonstrated its applicability in scenarios with unknown low-dimensional structures and weakly correlated models without factor structures. In empirical analyses for forecasting macroeconomic quantities, the FAST-NN estimates outperformed other estimates.
During the conference, Jianqing FAN encouraged the faculty to communicate more with scholars both domestically and internationally, emphasizing the importance of keeping their academic work at the forefront and maintaining novelty. He also delved deeper into discussions about the FAST-NN model with the faculty. The two experts answered questions raised by the young faculty members regarding time management anxiety, changing research directions, and personalized graduate student training.
In the future, the International School of Economic Management will continue to adhere to combining "bringing in" and "going out" targets, increasing academic exchanges across all regions, carrying out fundamental and original scientific research around, creating a favorable academic atmosphere, devoting itself to organized and high-quality research, and contributing to academic development.
