Abstract: This paper identifies the productivity gains from trade by studying the manipulation behavior of firms in response to regulatory policies on international trade in China.Bunching estimates show that participation in international trade increases firm productivity by approximately 26.9 percent of the control mean. The majority of productivity gains from trade stem from exporting goods to foreign markets, while a small proportion of the gains arise from importing intermediate inputs. A heterogeneous analysis shows that productivity gains from trade correlate with a country’s comparative advantage. Workers share productivity gains through increased wages but not increased employment. Less productive firms (i.e., older firms and state-owned firms) gain more from participating in trade relative to more productive firms, generating a catching up effect.
